My top five requirements for an interesting work life:
1. Challenging problems to solve
2. The opportunity to actively mentor a team
3. Active mentorship for myself
4. Participation in strategic planning
5. Participation in operational execution
My four core values:
Passion: Find your spark and fan the flames!
Integrity: Be yourself in everything you do.
Respect: Everyone can teach you something. Learn it.
Candor: An open mind requires open communication.
I've been a technologist for nearly seven years (since my early teens). In that time, I've worked with everything from soldering irons to software (in nearly every major language).
I'm also an accomplished product manager, technical lead, and manager of technical staff. I deeply enjoy the challenges in leadership and management; I find especially interesting helping people identify and hone their strengths while aligning them with the company's goals. In short, I like growing and fostering effective people.
1. There's greater potential for improvement. Saving half of 90% is a much bigger win than half of 10%.
2. Front end changes are simpler than back end. The techniques you'll use (minification, consolidation, compression, etc.) take engineer days, not weeks.
3. It's a demonstrably effective approach. It's not only been proven at Yahoo and elsewhere, you can likely make trivial changes to your own site and see the results immediately.

Three decades ago, Larry Ellison saw an opportunity other companies missed when he came across a description of a working prototype for a relational database and discovered that no company had committed to commercializing the technology. Ellison and his co-founders, Bob Miner and Ed Oates, realized there was tremendous business potential in the relational database model—but they may not have realized that they would change the face of business computing forever.
