Building category-defining companies isn't easy. That's why we at 8VC were beyond thrilled to host Guillermo Rauch (CEO Vercel) and Doug M. (fmr. CEO Splunk) in a conversation, as they shared valuable frameworks & lessons learned. It was an honor to moderate this panel. Huge thanks to my amazing 8VC team members Vivek Gopalan and Seetharam Venkatesh in making this panel happen. See below for the transcript of the panel. 8VC hosted this panel for the visiting SaaSBOOMi India community in May 2022 during a series of events in Silicon Valley. We at 8VC believe deeply in the ability of Enterprise SaaS and Infra founders across the world to build globally from day one, and we are here to support all the communities of "builders" who come to Silicon Valley and the USA, no matter whether 8VC is an investor or not. Entrepreneurs are the ones who put their lives and reputations on the line to make things happen, and all we at 8VC can do is offer them efficient help whenever we can. In this panel, the speakers cover: - How to recognize product-market fit and what bars people set for determining whether PMF has been achieved. - Frameworks for discussing PMF internally. - Instrumenting and creating an operating system for your core business. - Communications & operations challenges as your company scales. -Founder patterns & anti-patterns. & much more … If you read this and are excited, and are in the midst of creating your own category, please reach out to us at bhaskar@8vc.com or vivek@8vc.com. https://bit.ly/3RBqI0p cc: Vivek Gopalan Venkatesh S. 8VC tech events series continues. Was wonderful to host Guillermo Rauch and Lee Robinson from Vercel at SF 8VC in the presence of a highly technical and knowledgeable crowd - and learn from their insights around next.js and its interactions with the worlds of serverless, cloud infra, data tier, edge computing, generative AI and more. And lightning demos from our formidable friends at Tigris Data and Seaplane IO! Big thanks to the Vercel and 8VC teams for a great event - shout out to Kevin Chen, Vivek Gopalan and Isabela Becerra for being forces of nature on the 8VC side in this regard. We will have bi-weekly 8VC tech events coming up in SF and NYC around: Generative AI, Data Infra, Cloud tech, App Frameworks and Security Infra. Let us know if you have any suggestions on topics we should organize around and who we should invite as speakers. cc: Vivek Gopalan Venkatesh S. Last night we had the distinct pleasure of hosting a “Serverless Social” along with our good friends from Vercel, bringing together a great crowd of leaders and builders from across the serverless technology ecosystem. Programming kicked off with a fireside chat featuring Vercel’s CEO, Guillermo Rauch and VP of Developer Experience, Lee Robinson, moderated by 8VC Partner and CTO Bhaskar Ghosh. They hit on a number of resonant themes, including the beauty and technical sophistication of framework-defined infrastructure, and the rise of generative AI, leading to the explosion of generative AI applications built on top of Vercel. The chat was followed by compelling product demos from two of our portfolio companies: Tigris Data, creators of the leading code-first data platform for building rich applications for any scale, and Seaplane IO, which enables developers to deliver apps globally by unlocking all of the power (and none of the usual overhead) of multi-cloud and edge deployment. A big thank you to our speakers and guests, as well as the SF8 team for their sterling support for this event! CC: Bhaskar Ghosh Jack Moshkovich Vivek Gopalan Venkatesh S. Excited to be back state-side after a packed and exciting 8VC India trip. Lots of amazing tech events with founders and domain experts coming up in 8VC SF and 8VC NYC in March and Apr 2023. Areas: Apps, Cloud, AI, Data, Security. First up on Mar 22: A conversation, at our SF 8VC office, with the formidable leaders of Vercel - Guillermo (CEO) and Lee (VP of Dev Experience) around serverless, front-end frameworks (next.js is growing like weeds!) and an application-first view of the computing world, where programmers want to build smart apps that are (AI, data, cloud)-first while not worrying about underlying infrastructure. We have a few seats left https://lnkd.in/gvGRdS5f cc: Kevin Chen Vivek Gopalan 8VC Jack Moshkovich Guillermo Rauch Vercel Venkatesh S.
We’re pleased to share that we have a few spots remaining for our Serverless Social tomorrow evening at 8VC’s SF offices. We’ll be hosting not one but two Vercel leaders: CEO Guillermo Rauch and VP of Developer Experience Lee Robinson, in conversation with 8VC Partner and CTO Bhaskar Ghosh (BG to the fans). Vercel is the collaboration & deployment platform for frontend developers as well as the creator of Next.js, the world’s best-loved React framework - and one of the most exciting companies in our portfolio. Join us on the waterfront for a fireside chat, lightning demos, and stimulating conversations with your fellow frontend and serverless builders and enthusiasts! https://lnkd.in/gvGRdS5f

Trips to Bangalore never cease to be exciting, even amazing. Its a packed week, and first off - we were grateful to co-host a wonderful technical event with our dear friend Alok Goyal of Stellaris; it was an education listening to the insights from the formidable Ankit Bhati (Founder of Amnic, and ex founder/CTO of Ola) and Manish Jethani (Founder of Hevo Data). The India founder ecosystem was great, and its getting even better. Thanks to my colleague Vivek Gopalan for making all this happen, to our friends at Stellaris Venture Partners for being kind comrades as we engage deeply in the India-US startup corridor and to the many founders/CTO's who attended the event. Onwards to the next event and meeting of minds. cc: Vivek Gopalan Arthur James Gabe Rosen Venkatesh S. Last night marked the first in a series of many technical founder-centric events that we are hosting during our team's trip to India. Bangalore is our first leg, and we were delighted to co-host this panel with our good friends Stellaris Venture Partners. Alok Goyal moderated a conversation with Ankit Bhati (Co-founder of Amnic - an 8VC portfolio company, ex-CTO Ola ), Manish Jethani (CEO of Hevo Data), and our own Bhaskar Ghosh, aka BG. The discussion centered around innovation culture and engineering organizations at startups, important topics such as identifying product/market fit while iterating rapidly, and leveraging certain cloud technologies and open-source software to improve developer productivity. Key takeaways included: - Maintaining a strong engineering culture as a company scales often comes down to giving developers high ownership over the problems that they're solving. - Companies can only solve 1-2 hard engineering problems at a time. You must ruthlessly prioritize the ones that are core to the business and find abstractions for the rest. We were blown away by the insights of the founders that we spoke with, clarity and depth of questions, and the sheer creativity of the folks in our network. Hope to see many of you again shortly! Many thanks to Alok and the Stellaris team for their unceasing wisdom and friendship.

8VC’s upcoming visit to Bangalore and Chennai is drawing near, and our team of Bhaskar Ghosh, Vivek Gopalan, and Arthur James is starting things off in signature style. For the first innings of our trip, we’re excited to cohost a CTO & Founder Mixer with our friends at Stellaris Venture Partners! Good products, by necessity, must begin with strong features. Manish Jethani (co-founder & CEO of Hevo Data), Ankit Bhati (co-founder of Amnic), and Bhaskar Ghosh (Partner at 8VC) will discuss their respective approaches to engineering processes that promote excellence, moderated by Alok Goyal (Partner at Stellaris) and Sayantan Sarkar (VP at Stellaris). Date & Time: Wednesday 22nd Feb, 2023 | 6:30 PM onwards Venue: Hilton EGL, Bangalore Founders and engineering leaders are heartily encouraged to register here: https://lnkd.in/dST_akHh For any questions, please email Vivek Gopalan (vivek@8vc.com), with Shay Westermann(shay@8vc.com) in CC.

I will be on my second trip to India this year: Nov 13-18 in Bangalore and Chennai, and then Nov 19-23 in Kolkata to connect with friends, builders, VC's, founders, influencers and interesting people. Anyone in your network I should meet, or someone to invite to 8VC dinners we will host in BLR and Chennai? A personal note: Pankaj Patel (ex CDO of CISCO, and CEO of Nile) has been a mentor, friend, co-investor and fellow board member to me for 4+ years now. (I call him "uncle", and he calls me "dada" - I will leave you Indophiles in my network to figure out the language-relationship comedy there). Pankaj is a legend in Silicon Valley circles, so imagine my joy and gratefulness when 8VC got to lead the Series B in his epic company Nile more than 2 years ago. After 4 years of stealth, Nile - cofounded by Pankaj and John Chambers, and networking gurus Sri Hosakote and Suresh Katukam emerges from stealth with $125M in funding, to revolutionize enterprise networking. As is the 8VC custom, see a beautiful technical blog on Nile written by Vivek and Gabe from 8VC. https://lnkd.in/gHpcU-yn Thrilled to be a part of this generational journey! Thanks Pankaj. "We have seen the cloud transition happen everywhere, from vertical software to core enterprise infrastructure. Why hasn’t it happened to networking in an intelligent way? When something so fundamental remains broken for so long, it takes on an aura of inevitability. This pessimism, as much as any specific challenge, is what we live to fight against at 8VC. In Nile, with Pankaj Patel, John Chambers and the co-founding team, we found a group of builders who dared to look back at the domain they had essentially created and scaled in a past life, and had the freshness, urgency, depth and credibility to wake it from its long hibernation." Today, Nile emerges from stealth with over $125M in total funding. We are proud to participate along with March Capital, Koch Disruptive Technologies, JC2 Ventures, and ICONIQ Capital, and support Nile’s vast ambition to make enterprise networking effortless, constant, economical, and secure. We are likewise honored to partner with Nile’s incredible cofounders, CEO Pankaj Patel and John Chambers, as well as eminent leaders such as Suresh Katukam and Scott Gainey. Read on for a better understanding of the limitations and inefficiencies of enterprise networking as we know it, Nile’s elegant and far-reaching product offering, and the incredible journey of some of the legends of the industry to undertake this new chapter: https://bit.ly/3qDn2Q3

Inspired to listen to Karthik Ranganathan and yugabyte partners at the Yugabyte 2022 Executive Briefing Summit at the spectacular Presidio SF officer’s club! Can’t imagine a more beautiful venue for these amazing insights. Building a source of truth, cloud native database is so hard that very very few teams can even dare attempt it. But necessary for televising the upcoming enterprise application revolution which needs desperately to move on from legacy vendors ! Who but Kannan, Karthik, Bill and the formidable Yugabyte team to take this on? #YugabyteDB #cloud #databases Cc: Yugabyte 8VC Karthik Ranganathan Kannan Muthukkaruppan Bill Cook Suda Srinivasan Jai Das Deepak Jeevankumar
